Missing & Murdered Native Hawaiian Women, Girls, Māhū Research

Kamāwaelualani is one of the organizations that steward data on Missing and Murdered Native Hawaiian Women, Girls, Māhū (MMNHWMG). The MMNHWGM research uses community and survivor centered, Indigenous methodological approaches with the primary goal of raising the leo (voices) of survivors and their ʻohana (family) in advancing toward systems change that works toward ending violence against Native Hawaiian feminine people.

Kamāwaelualani, in collaboration with our partnered organizations, released the MMNHWG report I and is currently working on a MMNHWGM report II. These reports are the first of their kind to systematically research the factors that lead to Native Hawaiian feminine people to be missing and murdered and formulate solutions for policy and practice. The Missing and Murdered Native Hawaiian Women and Girls report I was funded by Papa Ola Lōkahi and was released in 2022. The Missing and Murdered Native Hawaiian Women, Girls, Māhū Report II will be released in 2025 and is funded by the Urban Indian Health Institute.

These reports are part of the international Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) movement started in Turtle Island (the U.S. continent) and Canada in response to the disproportionate rates of missing and murdered Indigenous peoples and the lack of appropriate systems response. These reports are a deliverable of the Missing and Murdered Native Hawaiian Task Force convened by HCR 11 and Co-Chaired by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Hawaiʻi State Commission on the Status of Women.

Grassroots and nonprofit organizations such as Af3irm, Pouhana O Nā Wāhine, and Medicine Wheel Ride have been at the piko of sustaining the MMNHWGM movement at the community levels.
